News: Barns Medical Practice

Congratulations to the Barns Medical Practice team – Jan McCulloch, Practice Manager qualified as an SVQ Assessor and Receptionists Hannah and Kerrie completed SCQF Level 5 Business Administration

Jan has been responsible for training staff at the practice for some time, and looked to achieve her Assessors Award (Learning and Development 9) as part of her Continuing Professional Development.

She said,

“Because I have been in this job role a good number of years, I didn’t find any particular difficulties in achieving the qualification.  I was very careful with time management, and wrote up reflective accounts as and when I had observed the candidates.  It is important to be strict with setting time aside to gather evidence for the qualification.  It was useful to be able to put theory such as VARCS behind an element of my role that I was naturally achieving before.  Sandra, the Assessor, was extremely supportive and very quick to come back to me with feedback on my reflective accounts.”

Jan is a huge advocate for the Modern Apprenticeship scheme, and has been training staff using the structure for over seven years.

Jan said.

“The key benefit for us is to have well trained staff within our own industry, and also the particular procedures here at Barns Medical Practice. The scheme offers an excellent training plan for new members of the administration team, and a good path to offer employees who wish to continue their professional development.  The qualification is achieved by staff evidencing tasks that they are already completing, so aside from several observations and meetings with their Assessor, it doesn’t take a lot of time away from their day to day tasks. This also means that we can be sure that their learning, and indeed qualification is valid to their job role”

Two of the Administration team, Kerrie and Hannah, recently completed the Business Administration Level 2 Award and have recently signed up to start Level 3.  The girls said,

“The only difficulty we found was getting used to the layouts required to submit evidence to our Assessor.  Once we understood that, the evidence was naturally occurring in our jobs and we found it relatively easy to complete the units for the qualification.”

When asked if they found any elements of the qualification particularly challenging they said,

“Not really, however it was beneficial for us to have a better understanding of security and business organisation.  The qualification has given us more confidence in our job roles.  Sandra was very approachable, provided great support and feedback, and was quite funny at times!”

RT Resources are delighted to be supporting Jan in her delivery of further Business Administration qualifications.
